What to do when you are out of character

Maybe you have an audition for a character description that feels far away from you. Perhaps you feel you can’t get to the character in an authentic way. You might even stifle your instincts because you think it’s not what the character would do.

You might think you’re only good at playing certain types of characters, that’s your whole range and anything outside of that is beyond your ability. Then you’re not able to get in the zone and really experience a character that’s different from you who are.

Feeling out of character can be frustrating!

What is happening? You’re approaching your character from a result-oriented perspective. You have an idea of how the character behaves and therefore it should look like a certain way. Sometimes actors even say “Well that’s wrong. The character wouldn’t do that.”

By doing that, you’re cutting yourself off from a world of possibilities. You’re limiting yourself to right/ wrong and good/ bad. You’re isolating yourself from the humanity and wholeness of a character.

WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?

When you watch my training you'll discover that It’s because you’ve been conditioned to behave, think and feel how authority tells you to. Your education has wired you to think outside of yourself, for an external solution from people who supposedly know better than you.

When you were little and you got upset at something, your parents told you to stop crying. Or don’t be angry. And as you grew up, there were consequences if you didn’t obey. You were punished: you were humiliated, you got a bad grade in school, people wouldn’t like you etc.

So now you’re an actor and you’re faced with a character that feels foreign to you. You can’t explore how you instinctively feel in your character’s circumstances because you don’t know how. You’ve been wired out of listening to your instinct. And now you only know how to do things the ‘right way’ to avoid getting it wrong.

In the work we do, we help actors unlearn their conditioning so they can experience their characters instinctively.

Watch my training below to hear all my thoughts on this topic.
