You've likely heard advice like "just be yourself," and you might love acting because of its connection to truth. Acting teachers often emphasize the importance of truth, yet in the high-pressure environment of auditions or taping, that truth can seem to slip away. You might feel close to it when preparing, but once the pressure kicks in, thoughts about what the casting director or script wants can pull you away from your authentic self.
This tug-of-war can lead to confusion. Should you focus on what they want, what's right for the character, or stay true to yourself? Many actors, despite taking numerous classes and reading countless books, find it difficult to achieve the level of truth they admire in others. This struggle often leads to self-doubt, an inner critic, and endless takes before settling on one to submit.
It's easy to get trapped in a cycle of anxiety, questioning whether your truth should come after figuring out what's "right." When you watch my training below you will discover that the issue is deeper than just a lack of technique. It's about the disconnection from your true self, which stems from a lifetime of conditioning. From childhood, you've been taught to suppress your true emotions to fit societal norms. This conditioning locks you into behaviors that feel safe but are far from your authentic self.
When you audition, this conditioning takes over. Your nervous system, trained to seek approval and avoid rejection, drives you to meet expectations rather than express your true self. This disconnect means you're often defending an ego shaped by past conditioning, not the unique individual you were born as.
To bring your true self to a role, you must undo your conditioning. When you do, you can approach your work from a place of authenticity, making your performances more vibrant and alive. This is when casting directors take notice, and you start booking roles because you're bringing something real and unique, not just what's expected.
After you watch the training, I'd love for you to join in the conversation happening in our private Facebook Group THE INSTINCTIVE ACTORS' SOCIETY.
