How overwhelmed are you about everything you have to do as an actor?

Jo Kelly

Getting headshots, filming a reel, casting workshops, taking classes, networking events, looking for representation, etc! There’s a lot to do and you might feel overwhelmed by all of it.

Overwhelmed is a word I hear a lot from actors. There’s too much to do or it’s too difficult. Some actors are even angry or bitter because they feel the industry is unfair.

If you recognize yourself in this at all, you might be taking that energy into your auditions where you don’t feel as open or present as you’d like to be. Then if you add to that, the pressure to do the scene in the “best” way you prepared: to learn your lines, scene breakdown/ analysis, sense memory, etc. Suddenly this art has been transformed into passion-less hard work and doing what you think you should do.

But if you remember, you got into the arts because you wanted to express yourself and be free.

When you watch my training below you'll discover that the reason why you think that you’re supposed to do all these things is because your instrument is not 100% free. When your instrument is not completely open and authentic, you’ll try to compensate by doing everything else. Leading to... the overwhelm.

You’ve made yourself believe that if you do all that hard work, then you’ll be fine. The only thing that works is an instrument that is radically untethered. Alive. Free. Instinctive.

Without that, you can take every workshop, reshoot your headshots multiple times a year, attend every networking event and it will amount to nothing.

When you approach acting from a place of being fully present, all of that busy work doesn’t need to happen. It’s so rare for an actor to be utterly themself, that when the industry sees it, they gravitate towards it.

You don’t need to chase anymore. You start attracting. The industry will move things around for you because you have the hot commodity everybody wants: the capacity to be free.

Watch my training below to hear all my thoughts on this topic.
