Feeling Doubt When You Act? Read This!

Jo Kelly

As actors, you might feel doubt about how you look, how you sound, how you perform, etc. This feeling might creep in while you're prepping for an audition, deciding which take to submit to a casting director, or questioning your worth and career path.

Doubt is one of the most common struggles actors face. And it's not just beginners who experience it. Even professionals with hundreds of credits feel it. Doubt is universal. It transcends experience levels, cultures, and geographical boundaries. It can make acting feel less enjoyable and more stressful, causing tension and anxiety from the moment you get an audition to the moment you decide which take to submit.

So why do we feel so much doubt? To understand this, we need to look back at our past. From a young age, we've been conditioned to suppress our true feelings and natural instincts. When we cried, we were pacified. When we were scared, we were told to be brave. When we got angry, we were told to calm down. Throughout our childhood and schooling, we were constantly told to conform, to sit still, and to follow the rules.

As artists, our job is to tap into our true essence and express it uniquely through our work. But how can we do this when we've been conditioned to doubt everything genuine about ourselves? The key is to undo this conditioning and to reconnect with our true and freel self.

Your worth isn't determined by external validation or by doing things "right." You are worthy simply because you exist. When you embrace this truth, you no longer act from a place of doubt, but from a place of authenticity and presence. This authenticity allows casting directors to truly see and feel you.

When you let go of doubt, you stop worrying about whether others will like you or if you're doing it "right." You become fully alive and present, embodying your character's needs instead of your ego's needs. This presence and authenticity make your performance compelling and real.
