You may have been used to in-person auditions and now you may have to deal with the fact that there are more and more self tapes. You may be requested to submit it for the next moment and before that, you need to learn your lines in a short time, find a partner that reads the other character’s lines, set up all the tech (the backdrop, your eye line, the light, etc) and take the time to choose the take you want to submit. All this process can put a lot of pressure on you, since you can’t just focus on doing your job as an actor.
And then, something similar may happen when you have a callback. The stakes are higher since you passed the first part of the process and you’re closer to booking. You’re aware that it’s a bigger opportunity that can change everything in your life and career. So you might feel even more pressure.
All this pressure and urgency may prevent you from showing up as the free and full version of yourself. You may be unable to show up with everything you had prepared and maybe practiced in your self-tape, on-camera or casting classes. Your instrument may definitely shrink with all this pressure.
When you watch my training below you will discover that the real problem is not the pressure that you feel, but the fact that you’re putting all your attention on doing the self tape or callback “well”, choosing the “right” take, looking confident and booking. When you do that, inevitably you’re not present to becoming your character, living their circumstances and fighting for what they need, which are your responsibilities as an actor. Instead, you’re focused on the result. And if you’re not present, we can’t see your uniqueness and aliveness, because you are not there. You’re busy in the result, trying to book; instead of devoting yourself, your presence, emotions, sensations and physicality to your character and story.
So in order not to get sucked into the pressure of your self tapes and callbacks, first you need to unlearn the mechanisms that get you attached to looking “good”, pleasing everybody and trying to do the scene “right” and that prevent you from being your authentic and free self. And then, you need to build back up your instinct, authenticity and uniqueness.
