You Hate The Material, Now What?

Today, we're going to discuss what you can do when you receive a script or sides that you don't like. Sometimes, you just need take an audition because you need the money or you want to work, regardless of whether you're excited about the material. And then at other times, you can book a job and realize later that you actually don't respect the material.

These incidents happen more than you think!

We previously discussed what to do when you don't like your scene partner, but when the issue is with the entire production, it can leave you feeling so frustrated and unsatisfied. You don't do your best work when you're in that negative place. And it can make you angry at the industry too.

To help you handle this tough situation, I hosted a LIVE training session and Q&A to share what you, as an actor, can be responsible for once you have that material in your hands, no matter what part of the production process you're in. The video is normally just for members of my private online community, The Instinctive Actors' Society, but today, I’m giving you access to it.

Here are a few highlights we covered:

  1. Your job is to defend your character, not to like the story. That is the audience’s job. Your responsibility as an actor is to bring life to a soul.

  2. Slow down and get to work. Within the material, no matter what it is, there is a human being going through something. Your job is to find empathy for them and connect to them, wherever their plight resonates with you.

  3. This is an opportunity to up your game as an actor. The choice is yours whether to use it, but... use it. ;) It may be uncomfortable, but you only really have two avenues when you HAVE to take the audition (or job): a) you can stay in judgment and add to your misery or b) make your piece into something that you believe in and can be proud of; that's all you can control anyway.

As a coach, I help actors work through the resistance that prevents them from being fully present, engaged and in the zone. If you haven't already, be sure to join the waitlist for my next free Instictive Actor webinar. We discuss how to liberate and free up your instrument from resistance just like what we're talking about today.

This is one of the basic ingredients to anything we do as actors, and you can benefit from this free training at any point in your career.
